NDR Fernsehen is the regional television program of Norddeutscher Rundfunk, produced jointly with Radio Bremen for the states of Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The program directorate, many editorial offices and the broadcast management are based in Hamburg-Lokstedt. On January 4, 1965, NDR, together with Radio Bremen and the then Sender Freies Berlin (SFB), began broadcasting its own third television program, initially as "Drittes Fernsehprogramm NDR/RB/SFB" (alternatively, various other names were used, including Nordkette or Nordschiene for short, and also simply called "Das Dritte" by viewers) for the states of Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen, as well as for West Berlin.
The first color broadcasts began in 1968.

The program was gradually expanded to a full program and since September 1991 can also be received via satellite in almost all of Europe. On January 1, 1992, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania joined NDR as the fourth state by state treaty. This increased N3's broadcast area accordingly, but as early as October 1992 SFB withdrew from the third television program N3 and thereafter broadcast an independent third television program for Berlin under the name B1, a predecessor of today's rbb Fernsehen.
